Lesson Procedure
- As you are going to being producing a one slide cartoon, think about what message it is that you wish to convey. Do you want to advertise a product? Tell a story? Crack a joke? Create a story board depicting your ideas and slide layout.
- Once you have chosen the context of your presentation, you will need to think about what images you would like to use. What image will sit in the background to set the scene? What characters are required? Are there any props required?
- Now that you have decided what images you would like to include, its time to go and find them. Check out Microsoft Clips on Line for a great range of still and animated images as well as photos and sound effects.
- Use a search engine to surf the web for you images or check out Google images for a huge range. Once you have found the images you want to use, lets save them to your folder on the school server (you will need to create and name a folder specifically for this task).
- Time to put it all together in a PowerPoint presentation. See sample file Two cows standing in a paddock cartoon.ppt. Animate your images so they come on and off the screen, add sound effects for that extra pizzaz and enjoy showing and sharing your presentations with your classmates.
Assessment
When assessing student learning consider:
- Did students create affective animations that would appeal to a chosen audience?
- Did students use the custom animation features effectively to bring characters to life?
How to create an animated cartoon in PowerPoint
In this activity we are animating images and adding sound files. Prior to beginning this tutorial, you will need to gather and save your sounds and pictures to file ready for use:
Saving images from the Internet
- Place your cursor on the image
- Right click the mouse and select Save Picture As
- From the Save Picture dialogue box, locate your folder on the school server and click Save
Saving sound files from the Internet

We are now going to insert images of our characters.

Adding dialogue boxes
We want the cows to look as though they are talking so we are going to create speech bubbles.
