Creating an Interactive Image
Print this Unit
(PDF 272KB)
In our example, we have used Microsoft PowerPoint to create an interactive image which allows a user to click on nominated parts of the picture which takes them to hyperlinked slides containing relevant information. To create an interactive image:
- Open Microsoft PowerPoint and from the Slide Layout menu in the task pane, select Blank Presentation
- Select Format > Background. Click the drop down menu and select Fill Effects

- From the Fill Effects options, select the Picture tab. Click Select Picture, locate your saved image from file and click Insert then OK then Apply. Your image will now be inserted as a background image
Adding Hyperlinks
Before we can add the hyperlinks from the main picture, we need something to hyperlink them to. Insert new slides and create your information slides for each hyperlink you want to create. Now we’re ready to go…
- Click on the first slide which contains your main picture. From the drawing toolbar select the Rectangle button. (You may like to select the Oval button if this is more appropriate to your image.) Hold your cursor button down and draw a shape over the area you would like hyperlinked

- While the shape is still highlighted, select Insert> Hyperlink. In the hyperlink dialogue box, select Places in this document and click on the slide you would like the hyperlink to take you to and click OK

- Lets make our shape invisible so we can see the image underneath. From the drawing toolbar, activate the drop down menu next to the Fill Colour button and select No Fill. Repeat this instruction changing the Line Colour to No Line
- Use the F5 command button on your keyboard to view your slideshow and test your hyperlink
- Continue adding hyperlinks from the main image to your information slides
Adding Action Buttons
Now that we have taken our viewers from the main image to the information slide, we want them to be able to return to the first slide to make further viewing choices. To do this we need to add action buttons.
- Click on the information slide. Select Slideshow> Action Buttons and choose an appropriate button from the options given.
- Once you have chosen an action button, your cursor will appear as a cross. Hold down the mouse button and draw your action button onto the screen. When you release the mouse button, the Action Button dialogue box will open. Select Hyperlink to

- Scroll down and select Slide then select the slide containing your main image. This button when viewed in a running slideshow, will take the user back to the main page for further choices. Continue adding action buttons to all information slides.
TIP! Once you have made an action button, highlight it and copy it. Now paste it on to all other information slides to save you having to remake new action buttons for each slide.
- That’s it folks… you're done!
